A whole naptime the other day was given to scrubbing the fridge. I thought just for fun I would take a break from cleaning-up drywall dust. I took out all the shelves went through every jar, made lasagne out of all that sauce in the top left corner and…
found a bunch of spoiled fruit. GRRRRRR…4 plums, 2 apples and, of course, 2 oranges.
The only thing to do is try to redeem myself and use up some of the cheese that is JUST shy of being an incredibly expensive mistake. I’m amazed once again at how much I watch now that I’m going to have to be accountable. I never would have thought about; blue cheese bread to eat as lunches this week. That would have been a shame.
Actually, I don’t even have a photo of the finished product as the bread got eaten up almost as soon as it was out of the oven. A few pickles and some cold cuts and this is a great lunch item.
All you do is mix; 1 cup of blue cheese (you could have shredded cheese instead of any sort), 2 tsp. baking powder , 1/3 cup sugar, 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flower and a dash of paprika. Crumble together and add; 1/2 cup melted butter, 1 1/4 cup milk (I had leftover milk that was beyond the happy drinking stage-thanks Kristen for the great tip) and two eggs. Mix until JUST combined an pour into a loaf pan. Bake in a moderate oven for 45 minutes.
A big chunk of pate would be pretty great with this too.
What!?
Still more cheese and milk just about to go off?
Macaroni and cheese to the rescue.
Must run now.
The builders are here (well, they are now here seven days a week), my bedroom windows go away today (we found somone to take them for their hunt camp) and we are going to have an actual basement floor. Two bedrooms are going to get back to normal by tonight so I’ll even have a place for my Godson to sleep after we have a Pokemon movie marathon.
Jane, today you're the food rescue queen for sure!
Actually, today I am the "finish- painting-two-rooms-so-that-I-can- sit-in-my-living-room-,-the-next-person-who-tracks-dirt-through-my-house-is-taking-his-life-in-his-hands-and-finish- the-bleeping-windows-in-my-bedroom-before-I-lose-it" Queen. It's a long title but I'm on the edge.
You impress me so much with your great ideas. When I find things that are about to go I spend too much time trawling the internet for recipe ideas. Then I think about how much time I am wasting and give up in disgust. Blerg…
Thanks so much-I pretty happy with the cheese bread and my husband ate his own weight in the mac and cheese. We tend to do leftovers for lunches so I was just trying to reinvent them.
I'm a new follower and hope you will keep me from wasting food. I've gotten better about cleaning out stuff before it goes bad, but I don't have any good recipes like your blue cheese bread. And that dip sounded soooo good.
I'm just winging it to be honest. Food Waste Friday is a fabulous idea by Frugal Girl. She is the bomb 🙂
